Wind Cavity

A wind cavity is a physical or acoustic barrier that protects the microphone from wind noise. It is used primarily in earbuds and headsets with built-in microphones to ensure clearer voice recordings and calls in windy environments.


What Is a Wind Cavity?

A wind cavity is typically a small recess or a specially designed cavity around the microphone, often combined with acoustic materials such as foam or mesh. It works by diverting or dampening airflow so that wind does not directly hit the microphone’s diaphragm. This reduces wind distortion and makes the voice clearer during calls, which is an advantage in windy conditions.

In earbuds and true wireless headsets, wind cavities are an important part of the microphone’s design and optimization, often in conjunction with software-based wind noise reduction (ENC – Environmental Noise Cancellation).
